Four months in the U.S. to see firsthand how a democracy works through the lens of the First Amendment
The World Press Institute offers a four-month fellowship for journalists interested in improving their journalism skills and honing their understanding of the role and responsibility of a free press in a democracy. You may be eligible for this program.
WPI is looking for up to ten good journalists with a minimum of five years of daily journalism, fluency in spoken and written English, and a commitment to a stellar career in journalism. We are interested in reporters and editors, whether from print, broadcast or new media. The program is not for educators, former journalists or people working in public relations.
The program starts in Minnesota, where WPI is headquartered at Macalester College, with a week-long seminar in advanced journalism skills, including expert Web searching strategies, computer-assisted reporting, investigative reporting, and ethics. The next three and a half months involve extensive travel and more than 150 briefings or reporting experiences across the U.S. You can see a summary of last year’s briefings on the WPI Web site at the address below.
Now in its 45th year, WPI has nearly 500 alumni in 94 countries. WPI pays all travel, lodging and other program expenses, including roundtrip airfare from your country, and a modest per diem to help cover food. WPI is a non-government organization. It gets its financial support from news media organizations, foundations, international businesses, and individual.
The deadline for completed application packages is December 31, 2005 to be considered for the 2006 program. The dates for the four months have yet to be finalized, but it will be approximately the months of August, September, October, and the first three weeks of November.
